Get Educated

Avalanche safety education is an essential piece to saving lives. Our mission is to provide the community with the correct tools to recognize, understand, and avoid avalanche risks while in the backcountry, the backyard, or on the jobsite. We host various types of educational opportunities throughout the Wood River, Magic and Treasure Valleys. Find the educational opportunity that fits into your schedule below.

Education Class Offerings

Introduction to Avalanche Presentations

A presentation introducing basic concepts about snow, avalanches, and traveling safely in avalanche terrain. We invite everyone to join, whether you’re learning about avalanches for the first time or are a seasoned backcountry user ready for a yearly refresher. $15 suggested donation, no pre registration required.

Introduction to Avalanche Field Days

A field day digging into avalanche rescue basics, snowpack layering, avalanche terrain identification, and basic backcountry travel. Participants must attend an Intro to Avalanches presentation prior to participating in the field day. $50 suggested donation to FSAC to cover instructor costs. Please sign up for a field day using the link to the form below.

Motorized Events

The Friends and the Sawtooth Snowmobile Club are teaming up to provide avalanche education specific to the motorized backcountry users. There will be both a presentation and a field day. We highly recommend coming to the presentation if you’d like to attend the field day.

After the Avalanche

An avalanche has happened and you’ve been able to successfully dig out your partner? Now what? The Friends of the Sawtooth Avalanche Center and Ketchum Fire are teaming up to offer classes on different aspects of patient care following an avalanche.
